A cobbler is a dessert that typically consists of fruit that is baked with a topping made of biscuit dough, pastry, or cake batter. The fruit can be fresh or canned, and it is often sweetened with sugar or other sweeteners. The topping is usually dropped in spoonfuls on top of the fruit, giving the dessert a rustic, uneven appearance.
Cobblers can be made with a wide variety of fruits, including peaches, apples, blueberries, cherries, and plums. They can also be made with a variety of toppings, such as a crumbly streusel, a flaky pastry crust, or a sweet and buttery biscuit dough.
The origins of the cobbler can be traced back to English settlers in North America 19th century, but the origin of the name is unclear. There are three different theories on how this dessert got its name.
Theory One.
The dessert name comes from an archaic word cobeler which means a wooden bowl.
Theory Two.
The pattern of the dessert after it had been baked resembled the stone pattern of a cobbled street.
Theory Three
Settlers to North America could no longer make the suet puddings they had enjoyed back in England as they no longer had access to the ingredients. They were forced to improvise and and choose ingredients they could source locally. They took these ingredients and cobbled them together to create a new dessert.
